Can anyone please provide me with a way that you can find Brazilian legal status without writing to a Brazilian patent agent?

Thanks,

Hi Bob, you can use the Brazilian National Industrial Property Institute database (INPI) at http://pesquisa.inpi.gov.br/MarcaPatente/jsp/servimg/validamagic.jsp?BasePesquisa=Patentes. You will find the legal status codes at the bottom of a full bibliographic record. For an explanation of the codes go to http://www6.inpi.gov.br/tabela_despachos/patentes/tabela_certificados.htm?tr10. Its all in Portuguese so its good to have Google (or other??) toolbar installed in your browser and set to autotranslate.

    Regards,

    Nick

    Hi Bob and Nick,

Bear with me here, because I haven't played too much in the Brazilian databases, but in addition to the resource Nick mentioned, I am aware of one other website (actually I found that we have it listed on the Intellogist Interactive Coverage Map), which is this search site:

    http://pesquisa.inpi.gov.br/PatNiver/PtnController

I have to admit that after playing with it a bit this morning and looking at the text in Google Translate, I'm still a bit unclear about exactly what it is. But, as far as I can tell, it seems to be some kind of expiration check?  When I enter a date into the search engine, it shows me patents that were issued on the same date 10 or 15 years prior, making me think that it's showing the patents that expired on the searched date.

Google tells me that the Portuguese on the site keeps referring to "birthdays."  If it is an expiration check, that's a pretty happy way of describing it!

    Hi Bob,

The INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB databases on STN include Brazilian legal status. To see a complete list of Brazilian legal status codes and their corresponding titles, simply go into either of the INPA files on STN and type in the command E BR/LSC. I have included a sample of that search, but understand that this is not complete; it is only the first 24 Brazilian legal status codes.

    Hi

Plain old espacenet now has BR legal status.  You may want to try there.  I only tried a recent publication so I'm not sure as to the coverage.

      Bob / Frazer,

Legal status information in Espacenet is taken from Inpadoc data (OPS).
The coverage and other important data for inpadoc is available at http://www.epo.org/patents/patent-information/raw-data/useful-tables.html. The links on this page are weekly updated. Do not store links to the specific files, because the filenames contain the weeknumber.

For Brazilian legal status information this site currently reports:
Brazilian national data from 01/03/1995 to 31/08/2010
PCT national entry data for week 02/01/2008 only

If PCT national entry data is your interest than WIPO's patentscope is a better source. It has a special tab in data display for national entry information.

      Regards,

      Gerben

    Dear Mr. Bob,

Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office  adopts international code for identifying patents
In tune with the intellectual property offices in Europe, Japan and the United States, the Brazilian INPI adopted a new code of identification of patent documents. The "kind codes", code that follows the standard of the World Intellectual Property Organization. The use of these codes allows the identification of patent applications filed and not yet granted and those granted.
From the 1993 edition (March 17, 2009) of the Industrial Property Gazette, official publication of the PTO, all applications for inventions, utility models and certificates of addition, published and awarded, will be identified by these codes. This standard can be found at: http://www.wipo.int/export/sites/www/standards/en/pdf/03-16-01.pdf.
