Hello PIUG colleagues,
On behalf of the PIUG Strategic Planning Committee, below please find a preliminary/draft version of a vision statement for the organization, together with the current mission statement (the mission will be unchanged during this planning cycle). The vision statement reflects where we would like to take PIUG over the next several years, whereas the mission statement is about the present. Your feedback is important to this process.
Please reply to this forum thread to provide any comments about the draft vision statement, preferably sometime within the next several days.
DRAFT VISION STATEMENT
The Patent Information Users Group (PIUG) is an international community comprising business, technical and legal professionals that aspires to connect and share knowledge related to global intellectual property, within an environment that is open and equal, to collaboratively improve current and future information services and products for all users.
Current Mission Statement
To support, assist, improve and enhance the success of patent information professionals through leadership, education, communication, advocacy and networking

Lucy,
Could you please explain why PIUG Strategic Planning Committee considers to extend the PIUG from a group of dedicated "patent information professionals" to a broad group of "business, technical and legal professionals", where "information professionals" even not mentioned as a core of the group?
On another point, at my opinion, PIUG should focus on review of quality of patent data and information services supplied patent offices and commercial producers and their accessibility for all users rather then been actively involved in any kind of commercial product development which words "collaboratively improve...information services and products" may imply.

Hi Alex
Thanks for your feedback. I think we meant for technical professionals to, of course, include information professionals and scientists. About your second comment, we were trying really hard not to become too wordy.
The committee will however consider everyone's feedback before finalizing the statement. Thanks again.

Lucy,
Thank you for clarification.
I think it is important that PIUG Strategic Planning Committee have brought the Vision Statement for open discussion. Even it might sound as a question of lexical subtleties, I suggest to exclude product and services from PIUG Vision (Mission) statement; instead to focus the Mission on promotion of effective use of patent information for legal, business, and technical decisions.
Again, thank you for discussing this topic.
Alex
