Dear PIUG Colleagues,
I'm curious what the requirements are for becoming a professional patent searcher, particularly in the mechanical and/or electrical arts, either as freelance/contract or working for a company. Is certification or licensing required? What type of legal liability is assumed? Any thoughts you may have are welcomed, please reply off list and I will post a summary for the list later.
Thank You,

Martin's forum topic corresponds to the message to the PIUG Discussion List (PIU...Martin's forum topic corresponds to the message to the PIUG Discussion List (PIUG-L)on 05 Aug 2008 (http://www.questel.com/piug/piugl2008/0570.html). I copied it in the PIUG Discussion Forum to highlight the value of this new medium.
This topic would have been an outstanding contribution to the PIUG Discussion Forum had it been operative at that time. We could all have seen the responses he received had this forum been used. Martin got a number of responses and provided a summary both on PIUG-L on August 28 (at http://www.questel.com/piug/piugl2008/0576.html) and then provided us on the wiki a summary page titles How to Become a Professional Patent Searcher.
This clearly remains a hot topic because the following people posted responses to Martin's summary email message on PIUG-L; these messages are available from the PIUG-L archives at http://www.questel.com/piug/piugl2008/subject.html:
We can see that these respondents might have taken alternative approaches on the wiki rather than PIUG-L:
My personal preference would be to have people either: (2) edit his summary page since the point of the wiki is to have people collaborate on content of pages or (1) continue the conversation on this forum page and let Martin update his summary accordingly. I don't believe that comments on wiki pages have the same impact as either of the first two choices.
In that light, I invite Martin and all other interested Wiki users to follow options (1) and (2) as the patent information community considers this matter.
Also, please attend Martin's Keynote Address at the PIUG 2008 Northeast Conference on "Certification, Licensure and Legal Liability for Patent Information Professionals: A Primer" and participate in the subsequent panel discussion.
