Comments or Questions on Members-Only Content

I had a question this morning which in turn brought up another question....Namely, is there a forum for comments/questions on the members only content?

Perhaps it is perfectly appropriate to ask these questions in the public forum pages? In a way, I suppose it advertises the existence of the members only section and may encourage membership. In my case, that is probably true.

On the other hand, maybe there is already a Q&A section among those pages that I just missed? I'm fairly certain that my question is not something that deservess a wiki page.

<My question is about the papers from the meeting that have been loaded, or really, the one from Monday morning that was not. The one about IP in a recession is of interest to someone at my company, but now states that permission was not granted. I was wondering if that is a final decision or if there is a possibility of it being loaded at some time in the future. Or maybe permission was denied because it will be published - if so, it would be helpful to know where it will be published.>

EDIT:

Thanks, Tom. I wasn't sure if posting about members only stuff would be telling tales out of school (it is among some online communities). If that's not the case here, I have no problem posting questions in the public Forums.

As for the presentation - I would appreciate it if you or one of the organizers could post where we could obtain either the presentation or a "reasonable facsimile" to pass on to other interested parties. I have no problem paying for its use, or obeying whatever copyright restrictions come with it (several of the professional organizations in my industry have severely restrictive copyrights). Since Mr. Newman did not give the presentation himself, I wasn't even sure if he was the correct person to contact at Thomson Reuters.

    Donna:

Let me say first that I think that posting this whole topic on the ECC Forum seems most appropriate. Your question is likely to be of interest to others and we on the ECC Forum are most likely to have your answer. Alternatively, you may always send me email directly at piugwikimaster@gmail.com if you don't want to communicate "in public" for any reason.

I never considered a "members-only" forum. Messages going to members only can still be generated via our membership management facility, but that isn't available for two-way give-and-take. The main PIUG Discussion Forum is the direct replacement for the defunct discussion list, and I don't recall anyone suggesting that it have a members only feature. Finally, any page in the members-only section can function essentially as a forum topic since each page (remember in the wiki, "every page is a page") has a collaborative comments functionality. In this case, you could have posted your question about the unavailability of the presentation by Giles Newman of Thomson Reuters ("Innovating into a Tempest: The Value of IP in a Recession"). That probably would have been read by fewer people than you would have liked; in this case, Mr. Newman is neither a PIUG member or registered on the PIUG wiki. Other folks from Thomson Reuters who are PIUG members might well have responded.

As you your main concern, the presentation by Giles Newman is the only one for which PIUG didn't receive permission to load on the wiki (not counting delinquent one that we are still expecting to get.) The note we got with with the presentation said: "Because Giles' presentation is copyrighted, his presentation cannot be published or reproduced by PIUG, so he will be unable to sign the speaker's consent form [giving permission]." Perhaps Thomson Reuters will reconsider. Until that time, there is nothing more I can do other than forward your request if you would prefer not to ask yourself.

    Donna:

I will contact Thomson Reuters again and will link them to this discussion to demonstrate your interest. I will post their further response. Note that Giles Newman did give the presentation. It was his manager, David Brown, who was originally scheduled to present in this slot.

      Tom/Donna,

Just a reminder, the ThomsonReuters talk is at the sponsors' spot, so they may have an exception. I think that we need to suggest to program committee, to request that sponsor's spot comply will all other speakers rules for a release. In any rate, I reiterate my suggestion given Cynthia before the meeting: if a permission for a release is not given for some reasons, it is announced before the talk so people who are interested would make extensive note-taking, w/o reliance on access to the slides after the meeting.

Dear all - I handled the release forms during the conference. Giles Newman declined to sign the release form, hence the unavailability of his slide deck.

David Brown gave a similar presentation at the IPI ConFex, and he didn't give permission to post the slides on that site either.  It's possible that he'd share with an individual who asked him personally - it wouldn't hurt to ask.

As I said I would, I have contacted Giles Newman. He responded today that he wanted another couple of days to discuss the matter with his colleagues and to try to arrange for a document that we could post. Please let this matter rest, i.e. don't contact Giles personally, until I can get back to you all with further information.
