Blog from September, 2010

Elliott Linder, Retired

Dear PIUG colleagues and friends,

After a leave of absence from work of more than one year to take care of my wife Marsha, who has been very ill, we have made the difficult decision to make my departure from Questel official.

I said when I interviewed for my original position at Questel in 2002 that I was hoping this would be my last job.  While this remains true, it is unfortunate that Marsha’s health has precipitated an earlier departure than we planned.

Thanks to many of you for your much-needed support and encouragement during Marsha’s and my most difficult times.  It gave us strength to persevere.  And while Marsha’s condition is slightly improved, we still have a long way to go.

Working at Questel has been a rewarding and enriching experience for me both professionally and personally.   Questel gave me the opportunity and freedom to make significant contributions to patent information handling.  I consider myself most fortunate to have worked here.  I also feel very proud of this dynamic and progressive organization and its ability to pull together and redistribute resources to forge ahead in a highly competitive environment. The results have been truly impressive.  See for yourself!

PIUG has for many years contributed significantly to the richness and joy of my professional life.  It has been loads of fun and laughter, a wellspring of human warmth, and an outlet for the thespian in many of us -- despite "Don't ask, don't tell."  I plan to remain connected.

My home email address for those who wish to keep in touch: elinder at verizon dot net

If you plan to be in the DC area, don't hesitate to let me know.

Fondest regards and, above all, good health,

Elliott

STN International is pleased to announce that we are presenting the Effective Sequence Searching on STN workshop on Wednesday, October 13 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick in conjunction with the 2010 PIUG NE meeting. In this workshop, learn how to most efficiently use the various sequence searching resources on STN. The session will explain the content and searching of the sequence databases available on STN, then will illustrate a comprehensive multifile search of patent sequence data, using the GENESEQ (DGENE), USGENE, PCTGEN and REGISTRY databases on STN. The workshop will provide a variety of practical tips, from preparing the query through to post-processing search results into a final report using STN Express.

Topics will include:

Introduction to STN sequence databases
A review of recent enhancements
BLAST search techniques
Sequence Code Match (motif) search techniques
Multifile patent sequence searching

This session will be of interest to those learning STN sequence searching, and those who are experienced searchers, who would like a refresher and to keep up to date on the latest enhancements. This workshop is free but registration is required. For more information or to register for this workshop, please visit http://www.stn-international.de/piug_stn_ws.html

Questel is pleased to invite you for a full-day workshop on orbit.com and MMS on Wednesday, October 13, from 9AM to 4PM. We are pleased to offer breakfast, lunch, refreshments and snacks. Please kindly mention your presence with us for lunch by October 10th to Sophie Ames at sames@questel.com.

9:00AM: Breakfast

9:30AM: ORBIT.COM 1.3 – Questel’s enhanced IP Portal! Semantics at the service of concept analysis and clustering
Speaker: Miguel Iglesias, Northern America Sales Manager
A new version of Orbit.com will be released this fall and presented at this workshop. We are proud to now offer concept analysis in Orbit.Com. This allows users to take semantics to a whole new level. Concepts in patents can be ranked, landscaped, and white space can be identified. Sorting search results by “relevance” will now take into account the types of fields, frequency, and proximity of keywords and be much more powerful.

12:00PM: Lunch

1:00PM: Merged Markush Service Basic Training Workshop
Speaker:  Joe Terlizzi, IP Specialist
This seminar covers the Merged Markush Service (MMS), a chemical structure searching database for Markush structures in patents, exclusively available on Questel. It is intended for beginners or as a refresher for the experienced searcher.

I am always impressed with the amount of recognition PIUG gets as an organization.  Both nationally and internationally our group is a recognized authority on patent information.  This point was once again brought home to me last week when I was contacted by a report in Minnesota and asked to comment on patent analysis software that a local law firm was bringing to market.  PIUG is mentioned in the article and the online version has a link to our website.

If you are interested in reading the story the URL is: http://tinyurl.com/36dk8uu

PIUG is mentioned about half-way through the article.

Message posted on behalf of the CEPIUG working group on Certification:

=====================================================

Dear all,

We have already quite a number of people who have indicated that in principle they are willing to sit one of the mock examinations for the Certification of Patent Information Specialists (we are very happy that most of them want to do both Paper A and Paper B).  However, for a proper evaluation of the exams, we need more people. The results plus the feedback from the participants will help to refine the format of the final examination papers.

The plan is to organize mock examination sessions before the end of 2010 in one or more locations. In order to prepare and organize these sessions, we already want to have an indication of the number of volunteers and where they come from. Therefore, our questions are:

  • Who is willing to sit and do a mock examination?
  • If so, do you want to do Chemistry or Engineering?
  • Do you want to do both papers (paper A ‘searching’, paper B ‘selection/analysis’, in total 2 days), or only 1?()*
  • Is reimbursement of the travel and hotel expenses a prerequisite in order to be allowed to participate?

()  {*}if only 1 day, preference for a paper can be indicated, but is not guaranteed since we need people for both papers

Please note when volunteering that you need to able to get/take time off from your work.

Since the dates and location(s) are not determined, yet, we realize that volunteers cannot make full commitments, but in this stage we want to make of list of those who seriously intend to participate.

Note: participation in the mock examinations will not result in certification, but it is a good learning experience for those who want to do the actual examination.

Looking forward to your responses,

With kind regards,
Bettina de Jong

Do you create reports combining data from different patent and/or drug pipeline databases?

If so, we'd like to request your participation in a BizInt survey on Rules for Selecting Data in Multi-Database Pipeline and Patents Reports.  Please help us by taking a brief survey about your "rules" -- how you choose data to represent related records in drug pipeline and/or patents reports.

http://www.surveygizmo.com/s/346806/selecting-data-in-multi-database-reports

Based on feedback from our spring (patents only) survey, you can now provide comments for every question!

Your answers will help guide the development of BizInt Smart Charts Reference Row features.  The results of this survey will also be presented at our upcoming fall conferences, including the ICIC meeting in Vienna.

Please fill out the survey in the next two weeks, by Friday 10 September.

Thank you!
