"The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost; for none now live who remember it.”… Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf Lords; great miners and craftsman of the mountain halls. And multiple were gifted to the race of men, who above all else desire power and wanted to dominate their respective industries… (Derived from the Lord of the Rings)
It began with the IT tools created by the information technology revolution in the sixties. These early developments gave rise to powerful patent analysis tools. These powerful tools gave companies a competitive advantage to dominate industries with the “rights to exclude” provided by patents. Soon there were many patent analysis tools with many really good features. But they were all deceived, for another tool was made: in the land of the free and home of the braves, the data scientists forged, in secret, a master tool to manipulate data from all others. And using this master tool, one can more effectively and efficiently massage patent data, generate useful insights, use it to gain competitive advantage and accelerate innovation. So there you have it, one patent analysis tool to rule them all...
Note, it is still all about information in information technology. Somewhere as the world changed, people grew in awe of the technology. Many forgot it is all about the information (I) in information technology (IT). It is the information needs that drives the choice of technology.
The democratization of patent analysis and visualization technology tools has led to an explosion of patent analysis tools and charts. The accompanying figure shows several examples of commonly used patent charts in the industry. Though the initial "level 1" quick patent charts can be done in minutes using powerful patent analytics tools, the generation of "GOOD CHARTS" with contextual awareness and analytical design may take weeks. Most value is generated when "IT centered quantitative level 2 analysis" is coupled with "people centered level 3 qualitative metrics" to provide enhanced context, insights, intelligence, and recommendations. It requires collaboration and alignment with the appropriate SME before you can take it to senior management. High powered patent analysis tools in the hands of trained patent analysts greatly enhance efficiency and ease review of voluminous patent data.
